Local bird guides/experts, Dave Benson and Mike Hendrickson, will take us on a journey through their stories and experience on what a Birdathon is, why to participate, and how to plan your “Big Day”. This presentation will also include birding hotspots in St. Louis County – where to go and what species to look for. Social, refreshments, and poster signing by Peter Hawkins, winner of photo contest for “Loon Appreciation Week” will all be part of this kick-off event.

Cost - $30 (*raise through pledges to help fund research/education programs at Hawk Ridge!)

The Birdathon is a fun, citizen-science event, which also serves as an important means of raising funds for the research and education programs of Hawk Ridge. Birders of all levels of ability are invited to form or join one of the birding teams attempting to find as many species as possible in a 24-hour period. Or, you can compete in other categories, such as a Big Sit or the non-motorized division. Prizes will be awarded for each category.

Boulder Birding Big Day
Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center

No birding experience necessary. All welcome!

The Boulder Birding Big Day invites participants to team up with local experts, grab binos and a bird book, and hit the trails. The 3.5 hour, friendly competition begins at 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday in May and concludes with a bird tally and door prizes. The Boulder Birding Big Day is part of ongoing citizen monitoring of indicator species at Boulder.

This open-house is for bird lovers young and old. Participants will see how birds are netted, banded and released. The timing is at peak migration and close enough to courtship time that the birds will be at their most colorful.  There will be fantastic photo opportunities with this program.

Cost: $1 for bird field guide/binoculars

Explore Hartley Park with your family and discover the diversity of birds along the beautiful trails. Go on a guided bird hike with an area bird watching enthusiast or go out on your own. Grab a checklist, binoculars, and field guide and keep track of what birds you see and hear on your journey.

All are invited to share stories and see what species were found by competing teams during their 24 hours in the field. Species highlights will also be shared from the Boulder Birding Big Day event and the Hartley/Duluth Audubon birding hikes.
