Come and celebrate the fall bird migration with us! Hawk Weekend is the annual festival held by the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in Duluth, MN. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one of North America’s best places to experience the fall bird migration at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve. There will be a variety of field trips, hikes, programs, and activities for all ages!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Friday, September 21st

  • 9am-4pm: Bird Migration & Programs at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve (click HERE for public program schedule)
  • 3pm-5:30pm (meet 3pm, board 3:15pm): Birding and Natural History Train Trip on Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad (click HERE for field trip schedule & details).

*Please note Friday dinner/speaker will not be held as part of the festival, due to separate gala event taking place on Friday, October 12th.

Saturday, September 22nd

  • Early morning: Birding Field Trips (click HERE for field trip schedule & details)
  • 9am-4pm: Bird Migration & Programs at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve (click HERE for public program schedule)
  • 2pm: Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory Annual Meeting (at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve Outdoor ClassroomRAIN location will be at Lester-Amity Chalet)
  • 4pm-6:30pm (meet 4pm, board 4:15pm): Vista Boat & Birding Dinner Cruise (click HERE for field trip schedule & details). FULL
  • 7:30 pm: Dr. Francesca J. Cuthbert, professor at the University of MN in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, has spent nearly 30 years working toward the recovery of a rare North American shorebird, the Piping Plover. Her current research also focuses on waterbird conservation in the Great Lakes. FREE for members or included with Festival wristband. Non-members $5 donation (at door). Location: Bohannon Hall 90, UMD at 7:30 PM. (Park in the pay lot across from the football field (Parking will be free). Then walk about a block into Ordean Court and take the Center set of doors on the North (right) side of the cul de sac. You will then be directly facing BohH 90. UMD Campus Parking map)

Sunday, September 23rd

Sun. Sept. 23rd (starts 1pm) & Mon. Sept. 24th (ends 3:30pm)

FESTIVAL FEES

A festival wristband ($5 daily or $10 weekend) is required for registration.

Wristbands can be purchased at Hawk Ridge. Pre-registration is only required for off-site field trips and workshops. Wristband admits you to all daily scheduled public programs at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve Fri. 9/21 through Sun. 9/23.  This wristband is non-refundable and public programs at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve may be canceled in inclement weather.

Other events, workshops and off-site field trips have additional fees.

There is no fee to visit Hawk Ridge.

Water, soda, and light snacks are available for purchase in our merchandise trailer. While we strive to have food trucks available at our event, we can’t guarantee lunch food for purchase. There are many restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive of Hawk Ridge.

Cancellation Information

  • Full refund (less $5 processing fee) is available if participant cancels more than two weeks prior; no refund if cancellation occurs less than two weeks prior and cannot be filled by wait list (no-shows do not apply).
  • In the event of illness or injury or family emergency with prior notification, full refund will be given (less $5 processing fee).
  • If Hawk Ridge needs to cancel the program, you will receive 100% refund.
