Join us for a weekend to celebrate the amazing spring bird migration here in Duluth, MN. Public education programs (migration interpretation & kid’s activities) at the West Skyline Spring Count, Spring Migration Workshop, Saturday Evening Presentation by UMD Graduate Students conducting bird research in conjunction with Hawk Ridge, and birding field trips offered Fri-Sun. Friday, April 24th

  • 10am-2pm: Bird Migration Viewing & Public Education at West Skyline Spring Count* Cost: FREE
  • 8:30pm: Nature at Night Field Trip (click HERE for field trip schedule & details) Cost: $25 members, $35 non-member ($10 for workshop registrants)

Saturday, April 25th

  • 6:30am St. Louis River Estuary Birding Trip (click HERE for field trip schedule & details) Cost: $15 members, $25 non-member ($10 for workshop registrants)
  • 10am-2pm: Bird Migration Viewing & Public Education at West Skyline Spring Count* Cost: FREE
  • 10am-4:30pm: Spring Migration Workshop (click HERE for workshop details) Cost of 2-day workshop (Sat & Sun): $100 members/MN Master Nat; $150 non-member
  • 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm): Join us before the speaker for social, raffle, and live bird.  At 7pm several University of Minnesota Graduate Students will present on their ongoing bird research in conjunction with Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. Cost: FREE for members/students/workshop participants; $5 non-members. Please RSVP via registration button above.

  • 8am-5pm (weather pending): RAPTORTHON Frank Nicoletti’s West Skyline Hawk Count Team will be tallying all bird species in support of Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory and the Hawk Migration Association of N.A. WEATHER: Inclement weather can impact (postpone/cancel) public program activities taking place at the West Skyline Spring Count. Registered field trip and workshop participants will be contacted by trip leaders for any changes.

DIRECTIONS: If you have not visited the West Skyline Spring Count, we recommend you reading our Visitor’s Guide. NOTE: our spring count is NOT held at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve. Directions are below:

In S, SW, SE, N, NW or W winds: Enger Tower.
Directions: From Hwy 35, take the Hwy 53 North exit (255A) in Duluth and continue on Hwy 53 North / Piedmont Ave to the stoplight where Piedmont Avenue splits off. Turn LEFT onto Piedmont Avenue, drive 1 block and turn LEFT onto 24th Ave West, then drive another block and turn LEFT onto West Skyline Parkway. Continue past the Enger Golf Course on West Skyline Parkway to a pullout overlook just below Enger Tower (marked with a sign, “Rice’s Point). You’ll come to West 5th Street if you go too far. If you don’t see anyone at the overlook with binoculars, try the Thompson Hill site. Parking available at Enger Tower Park, and Twin Ponds both a short walk from the count area. Feel free to drop participants at Rice’s Point and then park and return to the count area.

In NE or E winds: Thompson Hill.
Directions: From Hwy 35, take the Boundary Avenue exit (249) and cross to the north side of the freeway. Turn RIGHT onto West Skyline Parkway as if going to the Thompson Hill Rest Stop. Drive past the first rest stop entrance to the overlook directly below the rest stop. (You’ll come to the second rest stop entrance if you go too far.) Parking available in the Thompson Hill Rest Area. Feel free to drop participants then park and return to the count area.
