A Conversation with a Nicaraguan Neighbor

Francisco Jose Muñoz is a Nicaraguan coffee and vegetable farmer who co-authored the recently published the bi-lingual Guide to the Birds of Nicaragua. In addition to farming, Francisco oversees field studies of birds in northern Nicaragua, consults with various organizations regarding eco-tourism development and trains guides.

Guide to Birds of NicaraguaMinnesota and Nicaragua are shared homes for a variety of migratory species. Francisco is especially interested in these migrants and our duel responsibilities in caring for these species. He will speak directly on how climate change is impacting rural agricultural communities and birds in Nicaragua, provide information about the development of eco-tourism, and will share images of some of Nicaragua’s more exotic birds.

He serves as president of the El Triunfo Agricultural Cooperative, and is a member of the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives in Estelí, Nicaragua. He is married with five children, two of whom still live with his family in Estelí. Copies of the new book will be available.

The presentation will be held Wed. May 11th from 7-8 pm at Hartley Nature Center in Duluth.
