Central Flyway Broad-winged Hawk Project

Background

Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary are beginning a collaboration to expand the Broad-winged Hawk Project to the Central Flyway.

Researchers at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary PA have been studying various aspects of Broad-winged Hawk ecology in eastern North American since 2014. You can learn more about the project by visiting the Broad-winged Hawk Project webpage.

Project Goals

  1. Assess the winter range and flight path of Broad-winged Hawks in the Central Flyway
  2. Determine if Broad-winged Hawks use the same pathways in spring and fall and if they return to the same nesting areas
  3. Examine Broad-winged Hawk habitat needs to better advise conservation planning
  4. Assess stopover ecology and migration dynamics in central flyway Broad-winged Hawks compared to eastern flyway birds
